So this is basically a budget persona

Finished playing this last night. Really great game! 😁

I love "Believe it."

After playing persona and trails series, this was a good change of pace from the usual turn-based to action jrpg. And yes, cool music!

If you like persona you'll like this. I LOVE this game. One of my fave jrpgs ever. Ya the dungeons are like he said.. but the game is sooooo charming.

The only other falcom you've played? Holy crap man... Get on the legend of heroes trails in the sky trilogy and then the cold steel games right freaking now!!!

+anthony sweat Yeah I am, still needs a bit of work but it's passable. Also no Turbo is killing me so I'll probably look for a speedhack sometime soon.

+jRPGFanatic ah ok right on.. lol. It just showed up on my feed. Falcom is pretty great they have become a fav. Are you playing fan translations of the crossbell games? I need to do that.

Haha, this was over a year ago. I've beaten all the sky games and I'm trying to finish Zero and Ao before the PS4 CS remakes release in 2-3 months.

those minigames look familiar like I have seen them before in another game I have on my computer trails of cold steel 2 is where I have seen them before

TX was probably my favorite game of 2017 (with YS8 tied or just right behind). They took the great story format of the Trails series as well as their good writing (the story content itself could've used a bit more work but the way it was written was great) and YS's awesome combat system (mainly derived from older games like YS Oath in Felghana or Origins).

With that said though there was 1 aspect that pissed me off and that was Aksys's piss poor translation of the game. On the PS4 it's not as bad but the Vita version is filled with grammar, mispellings, and contextual mistakes constantly from chapters 5 or 6 onwards (chapters before that weren't as bad and mostly the same to the PS4's translation but it takes a noticeable nose dive from that point onwards on the Vita), thankfully they fixed many of the most egregious issues in the PS4 release but even so it just makes it look like they just halfassed the Vita version because they didn't expect it to sell or they just got the PS4's rights at those chapters and started to focus on that version over the Vita and took google translate, wait google translate could do a more competent job than what they did, to the Vita version of the game). Falcom's only mistake was giving the localization to a shitty translator like Aksys since most of their other translations have been bleh as well, would've loved Xseed but the whole reason they went with other companies for TX and YS8 was because Xseed was too busy with other projects that we'd probably still be waiting for the game to come over.

I love Ys and Legend of Heroes. But I was in doubt if I bought this game now or not.

I got the impression that the fighting is slow. I would like the game to be a rpg by turns ...

Anyway, the review helped. Thanks.

I'm still in doubt whether to buy or not, but it look better than before.

As others have noted, this is literally Trails of Cold Steel with the combat of Ys and a coat of paint (not saying this is bad as I love both those series). The characters, friendship events, free time, mini games & "materia" system are pulled straight out of ToCS and given different names.

This game is on sale so I was considering it. Think I'm gonna wait for a better sale tbh. Not sure why a Vita port is $60 anyway, even if it is enhanced.

So it's like a Persona game, just real time and quite inferior. I'm sold

+jRPGFanatic thanks. yes it's now 60 bucks on amazon. YS 8 was amazing.

+Dog4life Nice, someone else said they bought it for $60 which is a really great deal since it comes with a figure and also the card minigame which is cool. Yeah I loved Ys 8 as well but Tokyo Xanadu is also quite inferior to Ys as well lol. Have fun!

+jRPGFanatic i may get the limited edition, it's on sale right now :) pretty much loved Ys8... so no doubt i will enjoy this one too.

Haha, mostly just outside of combat it incorporates some persona like elements (bonding, time management, social stats, and a school setting). Definitely gave me some Persona vibes but you don't get any cool personas you can summon to use.

Snagged the limited edition on amazon today for 60 bucks. man what a huge saving! lol!

+D E N V R Nice, hope you enjoy it!

I got the standard edition on the ps store today for 23.99, it looks like a interesting game so I came to see the review while it’s downloading

That's a great deal. I'm jealous lol. I paid so much more for mine.

I'd give it an 8/10. Had started as 9, but things like the dungeons getting a bit samey, the game adding slightly annoying platforming, the weak after story that felt a bit like an extended replay of the final chapter and Kou's catchphrase kinda degraded it for me, to an 8.
Still enjoyed it a lot though! But CS 1 and 2 will always be better games for me.
maybe till I get into Ys.

+TheLazyWanderer Yeah, there were definitely some good moments in there. Lol, the day I want to kill myself from alcohol poisoning, I'll play that game.

I was just really satisfied with the characters (as expected of Falcom), even cried at times, it's just other things that made me not really love it.

Also, try and take a shot each time Kou says "koitsu wa" in a full play through. ;)

Haven't played CS 1 or 2 yet (will get to it once it comes out on PS4) but I think Xanadu is probably the weakest IP they have, at least out of their more recent line-up. Ys VIII was very well made, combat was great and the story and characters were appealing. That was an awesome game. So far from what I've played of trails in the sky, I only expect great things from CS. Tokyo Xanadu felt like it was lacking all around and didn't really excel at much. It's great that you enjoyed it for the most part though.

soooo, basically nihon falcom persona?

+TheLazyWanderer has social stats and has "social links", so yes, like Persona.

Ooooh, it takes place in a school and it has monsters, so it's like Persona.

No.

+jRPGFanatic don't worry, nothing can be as good as persona

You could think of it like that lol. Just don't expect it to be as good as Persona.

It seems to be the fusion of Trails of Cold Steel and Y's Lacrimosa of Dana

Yeah, just keep your expectations in check lol.

The combat looks really fun, albeit a bit simple, but it still has some mechanics that look interesting, like socketing your weapon. However, the high school portion looks incredibly dull, and I feel like, if I got this, I would be inadvertently rushing through it just so I could get to the actual gameplay. Relationship building isn't something I have any interest in, nor have I ever, and this game doesn't look like it would change that. It looks more like padding here just to make the game longer, when the developers should have made twice as many dungeons and maybe added some more to the combat.

That having been said, how much actual combat gameplay is there in relation to the high school parts? Is it 50/50? Or maybe 70% dungeon, 30% high school? I just want an idea, because I may get it on sale and try it if it's at least mostly combat.

Unfortunately for you. 75% city adventure, 25% Dungeons

ONE OF THE BOSSES OF THE GAME
Was so damn difficult to beat
The witch monster she appears in the opening theme of the game
She made me lose interest in th e game cuz I thought she Was the final boss but she was 3 chapters away from the ending
After u finish the game u still have epilogue to finish

the graphics are fine
i like the gameplay it is simple and easy
the story is typical and predictable
the interaction between the main characters only fine at first then after they get shio the rest is boring and predictable
i mean i like it when there are little conflicts between characters or little teasing or romance
but in this game( as many other games) it lacks them
i don't expect the lil romance but even the little teasing conflicts are gone
they are all so thoughtful and peaceful it is annoying to me so i lost interest in chapter 5 but then i liked the gameplay so i continued the other annoying thing in this game that u have to talk to stupid ppl in city and the free time but u can skip it
for someone like me who wants to complete the game 100% or try their best to accomplish that i had to go throw them

(I agree with 1st 3 lines.)
I like the X.R.C. interactions with each other their so unexpectedly peaceful and friendly with each other. because in-group fighting usually causes easily avoidable problems which easily piss me off.
especially the birds of a feather dynamic with Sugar-and-ice Stoic Kou and Defrosting Ice Queen Asuka

1st time i played this i almost did a natural 100% run(100 hours) but i didn't.
so i just did a New Game+, 100%(222 Hours total)

Well I like persona so I think I'm sold

I agree I like this game too despite what everyone says... it is like if trails of cold steel and YS had a car crash, true, but still I find it enjoyable

is this persona 3? hahaha

Sooo like, persona with active combat

And not nearly as good but yes.

So like every other mediocre jrpg out there, every thing is locked at the end-game segment, right? I'm currently playing this on the vita. the intro is tooo boring and that battle animation at the beginning is sooo ugly it gave me eye cancer, and it doesn't look like i'm gonna engage in any gameplay anytime soon.
* Sigh * is there anything, just anything out there like nier automata, i just want a good action jrpg for fuck'sake.

FYI, this game is training for employees and testing new technologies in falcom.. The story yah its slow.. But the ending is epic. After finish the game I'm rly wish for new series. Just when you play don't compare that's all. For me I play it like watching anime every day one chapter.

+jRPGFanatic been playing ys for a long time, a fantastic Ajrpg if you ask me, memories of celceta felt pretty meh, the checkpointing was bad and the overall world is boring, it has a nice combat though, and the interesting different story is what kept me hooked, but the other entries in the series were great.
I really love it when nihon falcom does things right, luckily their miss ups aren't game killers.
I'm gonna give tokyo xanadu another chance, i don't really have that much of choices on the vita.

Nothing is "locked" per se. It just gets better once you get more characters and get more options for customization. Even then it's just mostly the same. I just like some characters play style over others (these characters happen to come later). There isn't anything I've played that comes close to Nier but that doesn't say much since I haven't played too many action jRPGs. Have you tried the Ys series?

It’s on sale right now but I’m not fully hooked yet

Damn u

oh gosh this game looks so much like a copy and paste of trails of cold steel, lol

It's 50% off right now, bought it :D

That comment about sidequests confuses me a bit - does the general majority of JRPG-fans dislike sidequests? I always thought its about how they are implemented into the game system. Beyond that I think there are simply good and well-written ones and boring/bad ones.

yeah, it depends. I feel like "a lot" of jRPGs just have a bunch of side quests that don't really add anything to the story. Usually they're just fetch and kill quests with very little substance or reward. Sometimes they're just a bunch of activities to do in list format. A few games that immediately come to mind are Star Ocean 5, Sword Art Online (outside of character side stories), FFXV (except Tour quests), Shining Resonance and I even feel that way about the side quests in Octopath Traveler.

Trails in Disguise

Dang, aside from the combat, this looks so much like it's some modern day DLC campaign for Trails of Cold Steel II. The graphic design, art style, menus, text boxes, movement, cinematography and whatnot seem practically identical.

i need more persona in my life, but this will do

Just go play trails series

Just keep playing persona or any vanillaware game, this one is gonna bore you to death.

fucking weebs

i got this on steam and counted 10 cliche's in the first 10 minutes before regretting it. the thought of meaningful gameplay ahead thanks to this review has stayed my hand at getting a refund.

i'm cool with them appearing, but back to back one after the other, i feel like there's no creativity, or they're fishing for vets like me, so that they can pull one over on me. kinda like the doki doki literature club shenanigans. i write video game stories and design combat systems, so originality is a pet peeve of mine, that's all. thanks for replying and hearing me out.

Haha, I'm totally fine with cliches. I'm not sure how much it bothers you but you should trust your feelings about the game before your 2 hours are up. I thought combat was fun towards the end but the core gameplay remains the same. You're just stronger with more options which is always a nice feeling to have. I'm not entirely sure the combat will make the undesirable cliches bearable for you.

It’s pronounced “Zanadoo”

+Kama Jiu-jitsu  First of all, it's spelt, "Xanadu" you idiot.
Secondly, "Xanadu" is an ENGLISH word popularised by the ENGLISH poem, "Kubla Khan", written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who is an ENGLISH poet, in 1797, that is referring to the old CHINESE captial of Shangdu.
Shangdu, also known by its ENGLISH name, Xanadu, is located in Inner Mongolia (do we have some credibility to your bullshit comment here?), which is a region of CHINA (nope), and was Kublai Khan's capital during the Yuan Dynasty in CHINA, during which he was the CHINESE Emperor.

You are however correct about my generalisation and misuse of the word "ancient" to describe the time period.
But the year 1264 isn't early middle ages for China, it's mid to late middles ages.

Still.. go back to school.

+Marcus Carne Zanadu is a Mongolian word and city during the Yuan Dynasty in the early middle ages. Its not Chinese city and its not ancient. lol....

+The Merovingian I'm not sure if you have Tourette's, or you're just trying really hard to make it seem like I'm wrong.
You must have misread my comment, because, "Xanadu" is an English word, not Japanese.
Just because the game was made in Japan, and Japanese people pronounce it differently, doesn't stop it from being an English word, with correct English pronunciation.
For example, just because Japanese people pronounce the word, "idol" as "aidoru" (アイドル), doesn't mean that English speaking people, reading English text, of an English word are correct in pronouncing it as the Japanese do.
You fucking idiot.

+Marcus Carne Wow you're a fucking retard hahahahah hooooooly shit. Because it's not the Japanese version and being he's American, suddenly the correct pronunciation is different?? Hahahaha wow Youtube

+The Merovingian The guy speaks English, is playing a game in English, and is pronouncing an English word based off an ancient Chinese city.
He is not speaking Japanese, the game is not in the Japanese version, and the word doesn't originate in Japan. So please do explain where you're going with your comment.

Would of been better turn based battles

+jRPGFanatic nani, turn based is miles easier to pull off compared to action based.

Yeah, I agree. Just because it's hard does not mean it's impossible and to add to that just because it's action based does not automatically make it better than turn based. Also Octopath Traveler does it very well too. Looking forward to that game next month.

Not really weighing in on whether a turn-based system would benefit this game or not, but good turn-based combat absolutely can have a place in today's gaming market imo. Recent games like Persona 5 and Bravely Default/Second, as well as the (apparent) interest in ports like the Cold Steel games, Radiant Historia's 3DS remake, etc show that a classic turn-based system can still work very well. I would agree that turn-based battle systems have fallen out of favor though.

I'm curious on your reasoning on why it would be better turn based, not that I'm saying you're wrong. I actually enjoyed action gameplay and think that turn based would be too slow (and also in a game where the pacing starts off slow). I think it's hard to pull off good turn based combat in today's gaming market.

As a person who does not play a lot of JRPGs (have played Trails in the Sky 1 and 2), this game was still fun. I'd say 7/10. Characters and story were passable, though the story was slow at times and was quite predictable. Character wise, Kou was easily the most annoying one, with his " I can please everyone" attitude. I've said "Shut up, Kou", more times than I can count. He wasn't bad in the beginning, but getting to the midpoint of the game or so, his annoying behavior starts to shine. My biggest complaint (by preference) for the story was that it was very PG - friendship beats everything. You'd think with the amount of times the monsters roamed around the city (unstoppable monsters, unless you have the right weapons), there would be actually be some casualties. But the amount of times Kou and friends arrive just in time to save each other or the people in the city was too damn high for my taste. But still, this game was a good time waster of about 55 hours.

I understand where you're coming from. I like a good sad/depressing moment in a story but sometimes having light hearted PG friendship trumps all stories are a good change of pace. Glad to see you enjoyed it for the most part.

This graphics man WTF

I was just about to say it looks very similar to Ys VIII in appearance and mechanics, then ya said it lol.

Been a big fan of the Ys games for a long time, so i was hoping this would be as good going in, but i have to say...the only fitting word to describe Tokyo Xanadu so far, for me, is bland. Really really bland. Maybe i haven't gotten the game in to full swing yet, but most of the content in the first 6-8 hours are just hard to get excited about.

It's just such a huge contrast from Ys 8. That game just floored it as soon as the intro was over and when you got to the bits where the game slowed down a bit, you were invested enough in the characters and the story that it didn't matter that much. With Xanadu it's the polar opposite. I'm still waiting for the game to start being fun or gripping. Right now, it feels like a really uninspired clone of the Persona concept, but where the Persona games have great characters, interesting plot and an interesting combat system, Tokyo Xanadu just feel flat.

Does it get better later on? Is it worth playing further to get to the "good stuff", or are the first 6-8 hours pretty much what i can expect form the rest of the game? :P

I think the combination of slow burn and very sort of cookie cutter stereotype characters is what killed it for me. I'd like to think that it's not just the fact that i expected something different, but that some qualities of the game just aren't that exciting to me. Like the free time activity stuff, if that had a bit more depth and you really got big payoffs for investing your time in a character, then maybe i think this would be more appealing. Gonna have to point to Persona in this case, as that game is quite similar in that you go to school and do activities with your friends, but it's balanced in such a way that it's almost impossible to put the controller down. "Just one more day, then i'll quit!" happens at the end of every day, haha :)

But hey, thanks for the info. I'll give the game a few more hours to see if it starts growing on me, who knows? :)

If you're expecting something comparable to Ys (or even Persona), then Xanadu is definitely not that. It doesn't come close. I've only played Ys 8 so I can only speak from my experience of playing that game. For me, the game doesn't get good until roughly the last section of the game where you unlock more elemental slots, abilities, characters and the story starts to pick up. The last section is probably about 20 hours in? It's been a while so I don't remember exactly the amount of hours I spent.

Even with that considered, I think you'll probably end up disappointed in it purely due to the expectations you had coming in. If you're already uninterested in the characters and the story, there isn't much that will happen that will make you change your mind.

Yeah who cares about graphics, both this and ys memories of celceta are boring as hell, nihon falcom is going down the shitter, at least ys viii is fun judging from what i saw in the demo, i really enjoyed it.

I care

Tell me about it. I'm from Germany and most games journalists here have a background in PC gaming, which somehow results in many of them judging games solely based on how graphically impressive they are. Which in turn means games like those from Nihon Falcom get practically no coverage at all over here.

If I had seen gameplay first, instead of just the anime focused trailer on PS4 (as the game is on sale right now and that's why i'm watching at this video) I would definately see the Trails of Cold Steel resemblance in it. I love that game though I still have yet to beat it.

Is there much difference between this and persona? Besides the fighting

jRPGFanatic I just bought persona for 30 flat. I was hoping to get it for like $18 and yakuza 0 but those two fuckers don't drop below 30 ever so a caved and hit buy now. I feel like a sucker. But the game is good so far. I didn't know if using all my bullets on the first enemy was a good idea so I turned the game off to start over. I am starting my playthrogh Tuesday.

jRPGFanatic thank you! c: I think I will finish Persona 5 and 3, instead of getting this game then. The choice right now is between Tokyo X and Ys VIII. I watched your review on both games and I’m definitely gonna get the latter.

Yes. Persona is a better game in all aspects. While Xanadu does contain some social aspects that mimic Persona, Social life matters much more in Persona and is more heavily focused on. In Persona, social stats are much more meaningful and focused on as it blocks you from certain activities with your peers while social stats in Xanadu just gives you some items and can be completely ignored. The good thing about Xanadu though, is that you don't have to worry about the perfect run or a schedule since you are forced to do a NG+ run if you want to see all the social events.

If you're wondering about getting Persona or Xanadu, the choice would be to get Persona hands down. If you want a persona "clone", I wouldn't really consider this game that. It just borrows some social gameplay aspects from persona but on a very shallow level (when directly comparing it to Persona).
