All my senses tell me to trust the source of this review, but everyone else says the HD 600 have more detail than these headphones. Where these shine is in their sound stage. So, is everyone else wrong? I normally do not trust the masses, but I have not found anyone else that agrees with this review.

From MY experience, using a test tone generator, the HE-400S have very good bass extension down to about 40 Hz and usable bass down to 35Hz. There's nothing at 25 Hz and below. This is using the stock cushions. So for me, they produce plenty of un-bloated bass.

Anyway, where these really shine, is the phenomenal mid-range. Vocals never sounded better! The high end is a tad warm, but that's what I like as most headphones seem overly bright to me. At the cost of $179.00 I paid for these, I have yet to hear a better set of cans at anywhere near this price.

What amp would you recommend for these? In the $100-250 range

Get a 40 dollar Samson go mic tyll even that's a lot less shitty

I love these headphones

I'm confused as I've got this HPs (HE400s) but now I really don't like the sound from them but anyways I have to buy new pads for them as the old ones got destroyed cause of really poor quality. They are stock pads, so what other pads would you recommend me for them? As even if I want to sell them, then I probably would have to buy new pads. I've heard about Brainwavz "Ear Pads" Foam Memory but I don't know and it seems that they are a bit small for HE400s.. I use asymmetrical hybrid version of these pads for Sonorous 6..

About a year ago I bought these HE400S headphones, and have had nothing but problems since. First, and early on, the cable simply, um. committed suicide. Fine. I bought a better cable. Then one of the pads started to fall apart. Fine. I bought a set of Focus pads. Recently, the plastic headset broke. In fairness, I'm not blaming that last incident on the headset; I'm blaming that on me. It was just one straw too many. Then, tonight, I did what I should have done in the first place; I watched quite a few headset reviews here on the YouTube. As a result, I cancelled my PayPal payment to Hifiman for the replacement headset and bought the Sennheiser HD600. Money spent, and lesson learned.

I find it hard to believe, that in a material where Hi technology and expertise requirement are needed, such as the headphone industry, a small unknown boutique brand such a hifiman, can actually compete on the price/performance level against the biggest in the industry such as Sennheiser and Philips. this is why I am very skeptical regarding the true capabilities of this product, to be competitive for the long duration of ownership of these headphones - regardless of how they sound now when they are new and fresh to your ears. I bet on Fidelio X2 and HD580/600 to be the better choice after using them for at least 30 days. As an engineer I know by fact, you cannot bit the big names using a boutique level capital and tools. its an industry fact. we can see from the review that the headphones structural build and material is a toy grade. about the audio quality I cannot judge but trust your judgment. by the way the only mean to test headphone quality is with classical music. its the only true to reality recording of natural instruments. all the rest of music that is 90% synthetic and altered, is useless due to lack of reference to reality. so do people voices, EG singers - they can not tell us anything about reproduction quality of headphone  with out the same person standing next to us, giving his voice as reference. without reference one cannot know how close the reproduction is to the original creation. and this is where the Big names in industry know the job best. no wonder they are the PRO name in the studio level, there is a reason for that.

yeah.... making review of HI FI audio hardware and CAN'T make NORMAL quality recording... what an expert.....

I listen to a lot of different music but more recently I've been into electronic dance music. Would I be better off with these or the HD600?

Would you take these over the 249.99 he 400i?

I listen to alot of electronic music especially deep house and I find the bass in the HE 400s to be very deep and accurate. I think it just depends of the song

Hi!
Which one is better,HD 600 or HE 400S? Thanks for the reply

I have the he400s and I bought the Schiit Modi 2 and the Magni 2. I was hoping for a fuller bass response but I'm learning. Is there something that provides as good as highs/mids and a fuller bass response than the he400s? Money isn't a big deal. I can afford more if I need to.

Buy Focus Pads. For better bass extension.

and you can buy 24 pair of these game changers for the price of one new Hifiman Edition 6

t50rp mk3 or he400s ?

Maciej Maciej I'd say T50RP as long as you get the modded versions.

i would have gotten the he400i on sale over these but they dont ship it to denmark with that sale on. :'(

Are you ever going to review the Hifiman he 400i's ?

Kelly Foreman I think you made a mistake listening to a random dude on youtube and not to Tyll. The he400s is superior to he400i in almost every way. The review supports this since he hasnt even bothered to review the 400i.

+Kelly Foreman Should be really good, if you like tubes of course. Wish i could have taken advantage of that sale but i live in Denmark so no go sadly.

I also just bought a little dot 1+ and added the GE jan tubes I hope it's a good match?

Marcus Christensen yes I took full advantage of that sale ! Damn good deal!

+Kelly Foreman yes they are fantastic. Did you get them on the amazon sale?

Awesome review again man! Loved your video on the Philips X1 in the past which i bought instanty and never regretted that buy! The X1 pairs very well on my Colorfly C4 flac/mp3 player. Would you recommend this Hifiman 400S as an additional headphone equalling the Philips X1? Is it on par in terms of ambience warm vocal presence? (have had sennheiser 580 HD in the past and some other headphones)

HD600 is 265 on Amazon and the 650 coming in at 330. What makes you feel at 299 This headphone is better than each of those?

VERY NICE THANK YOU!

HE-400i is now $249 directly from HiFiMan, BuyDig.com and Amazon. The special runs until November 28th.

these or hd598?

Lol these are much better but are double the price.

Their price ranges are totally different so they aren't really comparable.

hey what is the extra $200 for the HE-400i tho?

build quality is a big difference. I know the 400i is harder to drive. 400s can be used with just a phone or mp3 player. You need an amp for the 400i

I mostly listen rock music, does anyone recommend this one for me?

My last comment had some nice likes but back to the toppic. Should I buy this?I am using the m50's and like them but want to take a step up to good open back headphones.

For an audio expert, you've got a shocking mic setup!

Sibilant AF even after I apply a solid -20 dB at 6 kHz, Jesus.

George Rickard yeah really, something's wrong here...

I can't imagine how the sound quality could get much better than the Shure se846

I want to change my SR325e for this ones, i like detailed headphones a tad bright if you want, im totally not a bass head, and this ones look like an upgrade in both sound quality and specially comfort, my Grados are killing my ears, and sound is extremely harsh with the G cush.

Would you recommend this set over a similarly-earcup'd Fostex T50RP MK3? How would you compare and rank them?

I have the Fostex T50RP MK3 w/Shure Alcantara pads and the HiFiMan HE-400s w/Focus Pads. The Fostex (even with the Alcantara pads) sounds a bit "tinny" (you exchange a bit of clarity in the mids for vastly improved bass with the Alcantaras vs the standard Fostex pads); the 400s w/standard pads are already very good, but w/Focus pads, the sub-bass is greatly improved (even the mid-bass is improved), with minute loss in clarity in the mids.
The HE-400s is a considerable (just a tiny bit shy of major) upgrade over the T50RP MK3, any way you cut it. Superior in every dept, modified or not. IMO Tyll is right on the money when he mentioned on his website that the HE-400s is worth getting over the T50RP MK3.

Brand new T50RP MK3 w/Alcantara pads will run you around $170-190; used (refurbished) HE-400s w/Focus pads will run you around $240-260. At that price point, it's worth it (that is my direct example).

Buydig.com had a sale, offering the HE-400i + FiiO Q1 Amp for $249. That deal is expired, but they are still offering that combo for $259.99. That would be the best possible deal out of the 3, IMO (keep in mind the HE-400i's caveats, though). Use code: WelcomeBG5 to knock off $5 from the combo price.

Hello, I'm currently deciding between either these HiFiMan HE-400S headphones with the FocusPad A ear pads, or the Oppo PM-3s. I'm deciding purely on sheer sound quality and accuracy (whichever one is closest in sound signature to Shure's top tier IEMs), plus these will be for home listening only so sound isolation isn't a factor. I will be using these with a Fiio Q1 Amp/DAC. Which of these two headphones would you recommend I choose? Here in the UK the Oppo is £349 vs £219 for the HiFiMan. Thank you.

I like to see you do a review on the he400i or the he560 ????

I have the HE400S playback chain, MiniMac iTunes, Bitperfect, USB, NAD D3020. Drives the cans nicely although the technically I know that impedance on the D3020 is supposedly too way higher than the 1:8 ratio rule of thumb normally given. They more voltage hungry than Sony MD7506s for instance but the amp still have plenty of juice to drive them well above comfortable listening levels into the noise induced hearing loss stage.

I have modded the cans by removing the fabric screen that is glued over the metal screen and when assembling put some blue tac in to hold the screens firm and ensure no vibrations (I was going to go back and use a small bead of hot glue but never got around to it). The sound stage could be improved further by replacing the fine mesh screens with more open grill. Yet to find a nice metal waste basket to cut up to replacement the original screens.

I tried the brainwavz pad for the extra bass slam and I went back angled velour pads my personal preference is I don't like extra slam airtight seal you get with the leather pads and the brainwavz pads are smaller than the original pads making them a tighter fit around the ear, a total waste of cash. Brought an extra 3m long cable off eBay and the 2.5mm jacks are great. If I had screw in jacks or pins I would have probably ripped the sockets out by now when I stood on the cable whilst wearing them. Great fit a little more squeeze pressure than I like (I am sensitive to this generally) but I set them on my bookshelf speakers as a stand and that problem is gone. The velour pads are as cool as it will get in the hot tropical climate I live in.

Interesting stuff. Had the HE-500 couple of years back. Great dark powerful sound but uncomfortable and iffy build quality. What stuck with me though was that HifiMan was a company to keep track of.

I'm pretty sure you've heard this before but try the Brainwavez Angled Memory Foam Ear Pads. I want to know your opinion as many people say it remedies the bass and sibilant issues on the HiFiMAN HE400S

tyll can you compare the hifiman he400s with the he400i pls? would be awesome!

Think you'll do a review of the hifiman hd-400i ? Just curious if it's worth the upgrade

Damn, I'm so torn right now !! Can't figure out if I want Mad Dog Pro, HIFIMAN HE400i, Sennheiser HD 600 or HD 650 (only $30 difference right now between the Sennheiser's) Any help from anyone who has heard them all would be greatly appreciated. Their going to be used for gaming, movies, and music so I need the best all rounder. Thanks

I ordered the Alpha Dogs but thanks for the info.

+StonedRambo01 The sennheisers are warmer sounding than the others and need amplification to really shine, so i wouldn't call them "all rounders" the hifiman's looks like your best best , unless you don't want to bother other people the mad dogs pros are the only closed headphones from the bunch.

Guys I need help, I enjoy a range of music but hip hop and indie rap is the majority of what I listen to, would these be good for me? If not what would be?

Billy Castaneda I disagree. The bass in the HE 400s are fairly neutral so if it's a bass heavy song the 400s will be very punchy, they just don't exaggerate the bass in a song that doesn't have alot of it. Too many people who listen to heavy bass genres such as deep house or hip hop etc buy headphones that emphasise more bass on top of what's already there giving them the impression that such a over emphasise level of bass in these genres is normal

The 400s doesn't have the bass for your type of music. I would suggest the X2 instead.

Have you heard the HE-400i? If so, how do they compare to the 400s?

Hey Tyll, I am wondering what amp did you used as a reference for the he400s ? Thank you for the review

I wonder why no HE-400i review yet, its another great Hifiman headphone for a great price. I recently got one during the sale when they were $299 and at that price there is nothing that can touch them in terms of price performance ratio imo. Even at around $470 now I still think they're a great headphone for the price, and I like them quite a bit more than my Sony MDR-Z7 which has a $699 msrp price tag.

Focus Pad, does wonders with these.

For a guy who exclusively discusses audio quality you sure have some pretty poor audio production on these videos.

I have HD600, HE-400S and R70x, so hope Audio Technica sends you an R70x for review because I think you might ( just ) include it in your lists'. I changed the velour pads on mine and bought Focus pads ( not the Focus A ) which adds a bit more low end.

I really tried to watch this review, but the constant thumping in the background was unbearable.

Will you get hands, or more likely ears, on the new Orpheus or doing a review? Would love to hear your opinion on it. Cheers

For those of you trying to decide between this and the Philips Fidelio X2 (sound quality aside), the X2 has superb build quality. It's miles better than any other headphone around this price.

dude get a better mic

This guy is full of shit. He has Beats Solo 2's up on his 'wall of fame'... seriously?!?
